Gamesa Installs Its First 5 MW Onshore Turbine Prototype

Gamesa has finished installing the first prototype of its G128-5.0 MW onshore turbine at its research and development facility in Spain. This triggers the type certification process, which is slated for completion during the last quarter of this year.

The G128-5.0 MW prototype has a rotor diameter of 128 meters and a total height of 184 meters. The G128-5.0 MW evolves from the company's 4.5 MW platform, and Gamesa says the new turbine is notably lightweight, which reduces the cost of related wind farm civil engineering work.

The company plans to install the first three G128-5.0 MW turbines this year at a TuuliWatti commercial wind farm in Finland. Gamesa will also operate and maintain this facility for 10 years.
