Firms Build More Service Boats To Meet Demand For U.K. Offshore Wind Installations

To meet growing demand for service vessels in the U.K. offshore wind market, Alicat Workboats and South Boats IOW have manufactured and built two class-certified vessels this year. Additionally, the companies indicate they manufactured three non-class-certified vessels for the European offshore wind market.

The first vessel, Dalby Aire, a 22-meter DNV-class-certified workboat, was built in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The second vessel, Seacat Defender, a 24-meter DNV-class certified workboat, was built in the Isle of Wight.

Alicat Workboats says that as more U.K.-based offshore wind farms come online, the need for service vessels will only become greater.

‘Since the construction and completion of those early U.K. Round One initiatives, international interest in offshore wind farms has skyrocketed,’ explains Steve Thacker, Alicat's general manager, adding that as turbine technology evolves, so too must the supply chain. ‘That's a key part of why we continue to invest in and back two key manufacturing, service and sales support hubs.’
