S&C Electric Co. has announced that the 6 MW/10 MWh Smarter Network Storage (SNS) project has officially opened in the U.K. The company says this represents Europe's largest battery energy storage project.
S&C Electric Europe, Samsung SDI and Younicos inked a deal in July to collaborate on deploying the technology onto a U.K. Power Networks substation in order to assess the role of energy storage.
S&C says it is the lead supplier to the $29.2 million SNS project, which could help provide more space on the grid for renewable energies, such as wind and solar.
‘Energy storage can play a major role in balancing the grid as it solves the problem of renewable intermittency by absorbing surplus power and releasing it when needed," says Andrew Jones, managing director of S&C Electric Europe. "This function simultaneously helps to securely balance capacity and supply, and protects the grid from stress events (e.g. power outages)."
