The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released an updated list of the top 25 purchasers in its Green Power Partnership. According to the new rankings, Pepsi Bottling Group, which recently announced an annual 629 kWh purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Sterling Planet, now matches 100% of its electricity used by its U.S. operations and places fourth on the list.
Meanwhile, PepsiCo continues to occupy the number-one spot on EPA's list – a position it reached in April with a REC purchase to match more than 1.1 billion kWh of power.
In addition, PepsiAmericas Inc. is purchasing RECs to match more than 157 million kWh of power. This individual purchase ranks number 13 on the EPA list, according to the company. Pepsi Bottling Ventures LLC is purchasing RECs to match nearly 15 million kWh of power.
Two of the top 10 REC purchasers – Wells Fargo and Co. at number two and Starbucks at number 10 – buy 100% wind-derived RECs. Other wind-only purchasers in the rankings include Vail Resorts, HSBC North America, New York University, The World Bank Group, University of Pennsylvania, Mohawk Fine Papers, NatureWorks LLC and Sprint Nextel.
