Dominion, a Richmond, Va.-headquartered integrated energy company, and Shell WindEnergy Inc., a subsidiary of Shell, will add a second phase to their joint wind energy project currently under construction in Grant County, West Virginia.
The first phase of the project, which comprises 82 turbines with a collective 164 MW capacity, is scheduled to begin operation in the fourth quarter of 2007. The second phase – planned to begin operation in 2008 – will include 50 more turbines and add 100 MW to the wind farm's capacity, according to the companies.
Electricity generated by the wind farm will flow across power lines from Mount Storm Power Station, including a 500,000-volt transmission line that Dominion has proposed in northern Virginia. Dominion and Shell WindEnergy add that the region around Mount Storm Power Station has been identified as one of the best wind turbine locations in the eastern U.S.
