DOE Chooses Broadwind Subsidiary As Partner For Dynamometer Upgrade

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has awarded a $1.37 million contract to Broadwind Energy Inc. subsidiary Brad Foote Gear Works Inc. to design and fabricate a 5.8 MW wind turbine gearbox for a new dynamometer at its National Wind Technology Center (NWTC).

The planned dynamometer upgrade at the NWTC, which provides customized turbine and component testing, will enhance the research and operational capabilities of the U.S. wind industry, NREL says. Dynamometer testing focuses on turbine components such as generators, gearboxes, power converters and control systems.

Broadwind Energy says it plans to deliver the gearbox to the NWTC this fall.
