Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Groundswell has selected Herndon, Va.-based Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) to power 23 houses of worship and three public charter schools with 100% wind power through the purchase of green-e-certified renewable energy certificates (RECs).
According to WGES, the community power program enables local institutions and residents in Washington, D.C., and Maryland to apply their collective buying power to shift to clean energy. The total combined annual electricity load contained in the agreement is approximately 10 million kWh.
The RECs used for commercial purposes are sourced from wind farms throughout the U.S., notes WGES.
