Customer enrollment in the Green Generation program, a renewable energy option offered by Jackson, Mich.-based Consumers Energy, has reached 10,000 – up from 2,500 just over a year ago.

As of December 2006, the Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy green power network ranked Xcel Energy No. 1 in green power customer participation, with 63,028 participants. We Energies ranked No. 10 with 15,823 participants.

Green Generation, which is certified by Green-e, allows customers to purchase a single block of renewable energy for $2.50 per month, or match a month's electricity use for an average cost of $12.00 to $14.00 per month, according to Consumers Energy.

Consumers Energy purchases some of its electricity for the program from two wind turbines near Mackinaw City, Mich. In addition, the company says it has entered into contracts with other wind-generation projects that are in various stages of development.
