Citing Opposition, Innergex Ceases Development Of Ontario Wind Farm

Independent power producer Innergex, along with partner the Algonquins of the Pikwakanagan First Nation, will no longer develop the 150 MW Nodinosi prospective wind project, located near Mattawa, Ontario.

According to the companies, local residents had concerns about the proposed wind farm, planned for the Phelps, Olrig and Mattawan townships of the Nipissing district. Therefore, without community support, the companies decided to abandon the project.

‘We strongly believe in a collaborative approach to project development, because social acceptability is essential to a successful project,’ says François Morin, senior advisor at Innergex. ‘The many concerns expressed by residents and local authorities have demonstrated that we do not have social acceptability for the Nodinosi project nor the context to develop such a collaborative approach. We will not pursue a project without the appropriate level of support of the community.’Â

Innergex says the Nodinosi project – submitted under the Independent Electrical System Operators request for proposals (RFP) for large-scale projects – was in the early stages of development.

Innergex says it will continue to pursue the development of other prospective projects in view of submitting them under the current RFP in Ontario.
