The California Independent System Operator Corp. (California ISO) is launching a new market system at midnight on March 31, with an initial trade date of April 1. The new system, known as market redesign and technology upgrade, provides the following benefits:
– allows the ISO to see and address grid bottlenecks a full day earlier,
– reduces the financial impact of bottlenecks,
– fosters more reliable operation of the grid,
– provides more information about where grid upgrades are needed most, and
– paves the way for demand response programs and other smart grid technologies.
While these changes are significant to the wholesale energy market, there will not be any immediate impact on retail customers.
