The Balfour Wind Energy Constructors (BWEC) joint venture recently completed construction of the first phase of the Alta Wind Energy Center project, which is located in California and being developed by Terra-Gen Power LLC.
The facility is expected to generate approximately 1.5 GW when all phases are complete. The first phase included the installation of 100 GE 1.5sle wind turbines tht deliver 150 MW to Southern California Edison's (SCE) WindHub via six miles of 230 kV transmission line.
The Alta Wind Energy Center is located in the foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains, with altitudes ranging from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. Despite the first phase's technically challenging site and an aggressive schedule, it was delivered on schedule and within budget for commercial operation per the requirements of the power purchase agreement with SCE, according to BWEC.
