Berkshire Wind Project Dedicated

Gov. Deval Patrick, D-Mass., joined developers from the Berkshire Wind Power Cooperative Corp. to celebrate the completion of a new 10-turbine wind project in Massachusetts.

The 15 MW project is located on the ridgeline of Brodie Mountain in Hancock, Mass. The project is owned by the Berkshire Wind Power Cooperative, which consists of 15 nonprofit public power entities, including the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Co. and 14 consumer-owned municipal utilities.

While the state's large investor-owned utilities are required under the Green Communities Act to purchase a minimum percentage of renewable energy for their customers each year, municipal electric companies, such as the project's owners, are not under a similar mandate.
