Bismarck, N.D.-based Basin Electric Power Cooperative has signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) totaling 300 MW for two wind projects being developed in the state.
According to Basin Electric, the PPAs were signed with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources and TradeWind Energy, each of which are developing wind farms in the state.
NextEra's 150 MW Dickinson Wind Energy Center is expected to be complete by the end of this year and TradeWind Energy's 150 MW Lindahl Wind Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016, the co-op notes.
The output from the wind farms will increase the renewable portion of Basin Electric's generating portfolio, which includes waste heat, to more than 1.4 GW when combined with additional wind generation commitments made in 2013, notes Paul Sukut, Basin Electric CEO and general manager.
‘These additional wind purchase opportunities fit nicely into our existing generation portfolio,’ Sukut says. ‘As we develop plans to meet our members' energy needs, we have not discounted any options that will help keep our member rates low.’
