Korean-based construction services provider GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) has named Alstom as turbine supplier to the 30 MW Gimnyeong wind farm, located in Jeju Island, Korea.
Under the contract, Alstom will supply, install and commission 10 3-MW ECO 110 onshore wind turbines on 90-meter towers. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year. The company notes that its ECO product line transfers bending loads directly to the tower, which allows for higher reliability of the drive train and reduced operation and maintenance costs over the lifetime of a wind turbine.
According to Alstom, the wind farm will help support the country's renewable energy portfolio. With its limited domestic energy sources and huge demand, Korea relies on foreign sources for 96% of its energy supply. In order to diversify its energy sources and increase the production of domestic energy, Korea has recently increased its focus on renewable energy.
