Seattle-based developer Summit Power Group has announced that the Fire Island Wind Project has entered commercial operation in Alaska.
According to the company, the 17.6 MW wind farm – which is located on Fire Island in Cook Inlet, three miles west of Anchorage – is the largest wind project currently online in the state.
The project, which was jointly developed by Cook Inlet Region Inc. (CIRI) and Summit Power, is owned and operated by Fire Island Wind LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CIRI.
Chugach Electric Association, the largest electric utility in Alaska, will buy the power from the project. The Fire Island Wind Project is Alaska's first major power project owned by an independent power producer, according to the companies. The project is expected to supply about 4% of Chugach's power.
