The U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has granted development consent to the 1.2 GW Hornsea 1 offshore wind project, to be located 120 km off the Yorkshire coast.
‘Making the most of Britain's homegrown energy is crucial to creating job and business opportunities in the U.K., getting the best deal for consumers and reducing our reliance on foreign imports,’ says DECC Secretary Ed Davey. "Wind power is vital to this plan, with 14.5 billion [British pounds] invested since 2010 into an industry which supports 35,400 jobs."
According to the DECC, Hornsea 1 is expected to create up to 2,500 local jobs.
Hornsea 1 is being developed by SMartWind – a consortium of Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Financial Services – and DONG Energy. The project is part of the wider Hornsea Offshore Wind Farm zone, which is slated to have a maximum capacity of 4 GW.
The project partners say Hornsea 1 is scheduled to commence operation by 2020.
