NKT Provides 72 kV Connector For MHI Vestas Wind Turbine

NKT Cables, which develops, manufactures and markets cables, solutions and accessories for electrical infrastructure, the construction field, and the railway and automotive industries, says it has supplied a 72 kV connector to enable power transmission from one of the two V164 8 MW prototype wind turbines from MHI Vestas installed in Maade, near Esbjerg, on Denmark’s west coast.

The two wind turbines, which are the largest on the market, according to the company, provide power to approximately 18,000 Danish households.

NKT says the Maade project is one of the first to make use of the 72 kV connector and that installation was handled by VB-entreprise, an experienced local partner.

According to the company, the e-module connector features a high-voltage transformer and a new Mitsuchish 72 kW gas-insulated switchgear to be connected to the power grid. The company adds that a 400 mm2 72 kW high-voltage cable from NKT Cables was connected to the switchgear via the new outer cone cable connector type CB 72, made of silicone rubber.

Konstantin Kurfiss, senior vice president of medium-voltage accessories, states, “The CB 72 connector, combined with our Array Cable Transition Box, represents significant process efficiencies, as it will be possible to energize the wind farm before all wind turbines are installed. That ensures our customers both an earlier utilization of investment and increased productivity compared with other solutions.”
