Wind Energy PTC Opponents: ‘Infant Industry Argument Is A Smoke Screen’

0

A coalition of 88 organizations is urging Congress to oppose an extension of the wind energy production tax credit (PTC), which the group says is wasteful, distorts the energy market and increases energy prices.

In September, the group – led by Americans for Prosperity – wrote a similar letter to Congress, with 64 organizations supporting it. However, the coalition says more organizations have joined the group recently due to increased wind energy lobbying activity on Capitol Hill.

In the most recent letter, the coalition claims the wind energy industry is getting "special tax treatment."

‘Whenever the government protects a particular industry, as it has with wind energy production, the industry tends to remain dependent on it,’ they wrote. ‘As Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman noted, 'The infant industry argument is a smoke screen. The so-called infants never grow up.'’
