Green Mountain Power notes that a recent Town Meeting vote in Lowell, Vt., showed increased support for its 63 MW Kingdom Community Wind plant, which began operating in 2012.
According to the company, 80% of the residents at the meeting favored the wind farm – 5% higher than when the town took its first vote on the project in 2010.
"It's so important to Green Mountain Power to have strong community support, and we are very grateful for the trust that the people of Lowell have placed in us," says Mary Powell, president and CEO of Green Mountain Power. "Projects like this demonstrate that renewable energy development of this size and scope can succeed at generating clean, cost-effective and reliable energy for Vermont with the ongoing backing of local communities."
Green Mountain Power notes that it provides Lowell with an annual tax payment of $535,000. In addition, GMP says it continues to give back to surrounding communities by sharing with them the benefits of the wind farm through the Good Neighbor Fund, which provided $126,959 in support of five nearby towns.
