Acciona Energy USA Global LLC has announced $40,000 in scholarships to 10 college-bound students from Illinois, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas.
Acciona scholarships are available to students in U.S. counties in which the company owns and operates wind farms. Since awarding its first scholarship in 2009, the company has given scholarships totaling $250,000 to more than 60 students.
“When Acciona builds in a community, we invest in that community,” states Rafael Esteban, CEO of Acciona Energy USA Global LLC. “These students represent the next generation of innovators, and Acciona is proud to support their drive to build a better planet.”
Sponsoring the scholarships are the Tatanka Wind Farm in North and South Dakota, the EcoGrove Wind Farm in Illinois, the Red Hills Wind Farm in Oklahoma, and the San Roman Wind Farm in Texas. The one-year scholarships, ranging from $2,500 to $5,000, are paid upon successful completion of a student’s first semester and enrollment in the second semester. The scholarships go to graduating high school seniors who are interested in careers in sustainability.
This summer, 2017 scholarship winner Frederick Lapka is interning at the Tatanka Wind Farm.
“The Acciona scholarship program helped me take the next step in my education, and with hard work, I’m hoping to launch a career in wind power,” Lapka says.
