Progress Energy Carolinas Issues Wind-Specific RFP

0

Progress Energy Carolinas has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for electricity generated from wind resources. This request is part of the utility's efforts to increase the amount of electricity purchased from renewable energy resources and is its first RFP focused only on wind power projects.

The company is seeking proposals from newly constructed or existing wind power projects for the supply of renewable energy and renewable energy certificates that comply with the requirements of North Carolina's renewable energy and efficiency portfolio standard.

Projects must be at least 5 MW. Facilities located in North Carolina are preferred, but others outside the state will be considered, provided the energy from the facility can be delivered to the Progress Energy Carolinas transmission grid.

Proposals received from qualified bidders will be evaluated based on cost and other attributes. Short-list determination, if applicable, is scheduled for Aug. 15. Contract negotiations are scheduled to be completed by the end of the third quarter.

Progress Energy Carolinas is also investing in a three-year study of the potential for offshore wind power in North Carolina. Led by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this study is expected to provide specific data and forecasting tools to help decision-makers plan for potential offshore wind power projects.

Deadline: July 25.
