OX2 and Ingka Investments, part of the Ingka Group and an IKEA retailer, have submitted a permit application under Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone act to construct Neptunus, a planned 3.1 GW energy hub off the coast of Blekinge in the country’s south.
The project, expected to be located 50 km offshore, is planned to include up to 207 turbines with a maximum height of up to 420 m. Energy production is estimated to be up to 5 TWh annually, corresponding to the electricity consumption of the region.
“Neptunus is one of the first of the next generation of wind farms,” says OX2’s Emelie Zakrisson. ”By producing renewable energy and hydrogen, Sweden will be able to secure energy for sectors that can’t be electrified. The oxygen from the hydrogen production can also be used to oxygenate the bottom water in the Baltic Sea and improve biodiversity.”
OX2 had previously applied for a Natura 2000 permit for the energy hub. If these permits are approved, construction can start in 2030.
