The European Investment Bank (EIB) is supporting construction of the 1.1 GW Thor Wind Farm in the Danish North Sea being developed by RWE with a €1.2 billion loan.

The wind farm is set to consist of 72 wind turbines by Siemens Gamesa, each with a 15 MW capacity. Connection to the Danish national grid is being built by transmission system operator Energinet.

The EIB loan is expected to co-finance monopile foundations, turbines, inter-array cabling, an offshore converter station, export cables, a section of onshore cables and an onshore substation.

Main offshore installation work is scheduled for next year and 2026, with the wind farm scheduled for completion in 2027.

“The EIB was one of the very first investors in wind power technology and offshore wind farms. We will continue to support the development and the roll out of this technology,” says Nicola Beer, EIB vice president.

“A large offshore wind farm that can provide power to more than a million households supports the transition to a net zero economy in Europe, fostering one of the big priorities of the European Union for a better and resilient future of citizens.”
