EDP Renewables North America LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of EDP Renewables (EDPR) has secured a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Great Plains Energy to sell the energy produced by the 200 MW Prairie Queen wind farm.

The Prairie Queen wind farm is located in Allen County, Kan. Operations are expected to begin in 2019.

Through this new arrangement, EDPR will expand its footprint in Kansas to a total of 600 MW. The company says it has already locked down 1.5 GW in long-term agreements in the U.S. for projects to be installed in 2016-2020.

“This agreement will allow EDPR to continue to execute its growth strategy based on the development of competitive projects with long-term visibility,” comments Joâo Manso Neto, CEO of EDPR. “Contracts like PPAs, in which EDPR is a pioneer in the United States, will also form part of the future energy landscape in Europe, where they are still in very early stages of development. We expect to see increasingly more agreements of this kind to benefit both energy producers and consumers.”
