Dominion Installs 50th Monopile Foundation

The 50th monopile foundation for Dominion Energy’s 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) has been installed, 33 miles from the Virginia Beach coast.

The monopile foundations, which are being staged at Portsmouth Marine Terminal, are single vertical, steel cylinders manufactured by EEW SPC and are being installed into the sea floor to support the project’s wind turbine generators.

Consistent with the project’s construction schedule, the company expects to continue installing monopiles through the fall and resume installations next May.

“Our on-time, on-budget Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project proves that regulated offshore wind works in the United States,” says Robert M. Blue, Dominion Energy’s chairman, president and chief executive officer.

“Offshore wind is critical to our all-of-the-above approach to provide our customers with affordable, reliable and increasingly clean energy.”

CVOW, currently the largest offshore wind project under construction in the U.S., is set to consist of 176 turbines. Construction is slated for completion in 2026.
