The Danish Energy Agency has published its plan for Program Bornholm Energy Island, which it hopes will set the framework for the future project site and adjacent coastal areas.
The project is expected to consist of an offshore wind farm south of Bornholm with a 3.8 GW capacity as well as high-voltage installations on Bornholm and Zealand.
In 2022, the government and signatory parties to the agreement agreed to expand the project from 2 to 3 GW. Last spring, the current government and signatory parties then entered into an additional agreement setting the tender framework for the 3 GW at Bornholm Energy Island, with the possibility of 800 MW overplanting.
Based on a strategic environmental assessment of the project and consultation responses received, the agency adjusted the planning areas to accommodate environmental issues and planning restrictions in the area.
In parallel with the agency’s planning and assessment process, Energinet, the developer of Bornholm Energy Island’s onshore facilities, is carrying out an environmental assessment for the facilities on Zealand and Bornholm, as well as submarine cables between the two station facilities.
