The City of Palo Alto, Calif., has issued a request for proposals (RFP) seeking renewable energy resources.
The City wants to contract for projects (or off-take shares of projects) yielding between 20 GWh and 60 GWh of electric output per year, with deliveries beginning between 2014 and 2016. The contract terms could range from five to 30 years.
Palo Alto notes it is a chartered city located in the San Francisco Bay Area and has a tradition of over 100 years of public utility operation. It has a peak demand of 180 MW and an annual energy demand of 1,000 GWh, which is currently satisfied through a variety of resources, including rights to the output of two hydroelectric plants, several renewable energy contracts, and various bilateral power purchase agreements.
Palo Alto's implementation of renewable energy programs began in the early 1980s with the introduction of a solar heating program. The City has since adopted a renewable energy supply target of receiving 33% by 2015.
