BGS Awarded Iceland Offshore Development Research Grant

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has been awarded the NERC-Arctic grant for a one-year collaboration project with the Iceland GeoSurvey (ISOR) on the potential for wind development offshore Iceland.

As part of the project, there will be a field trip to Iceland in August and another to Scotland in September, focused on the process of geological ground model development.

As part of the Icelandic fieldwork, the partnership will head to Skeiðarársandur, the world’s largest glacial outwash plain, and what BGS calls an analogue for subsurface conditions expected in buried palaeo-landscapes found in the North Sea.

The partnership hopes to gain a deeper understanding of glacial systems off the coast of Iceland compared to the U.K., enabling project partners to make more informed assessments regarding infrastructure foundation designs.
