Several large wind turbine components have been successfully transported from Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor to the Kahuku wind project site in Hawaii. The test transport operation, which was coordinated with Hawaii's Department of Transportation (DOT), required the use of oversized trailers, according to project developer First Wind.
Because of the successful test runs – and to minimize traffic disruptions – the DOT has approved the transportation of the components in the evenings and early mornings. Deliveries are expected to continue through September.
Each delivery will have a police escort. Drivers are asked to exercise caution when encountering the oversized trailers. First Wind is working with DOT, the Honolulu Police Department and other organizations along the delivery route.
