Energy Secretary Steven Chu visited Scotland and Ireland this week, where he met with government and academic leaders engaged in clean energy industries.
Both Scotland and Ireland share similar energy challenges and resources with the U.S., including significant offshore wind energy potential. These countries have set rigorous renewable energy goals in order to meet the European Union's target of 20% energy from renewable sources by 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Chu delivered a keynote address at the Glasgow Science Center. He also toured the University of Strathclyde's research facilities, including a high-voltage technology laboratory, a wind energy systems training center and a microgrid laboratory.
