DONG Energy has announced that the 367.2 MW Walney wind farm – which the company says is the ‘largest offshore wind project in the world’ – is set to enter commercial operation.

The wind farm – which is a joint venture between DONG Energy (50.1%), SSE (25.1%) and OPW (24.8%) – required an investment of 1 billion British pounds. It consists of 102 3.6 MW Siemens wind turbines located approximately 15 km from the coastline of Walney Island in the U.K. and will supply renewable energy to approximately 320,000 households, according to DONG Energy.

All of the turbines and cables for the project were installed in just five months and 13 days, which DONG Energy says is an offshore wind record.
