Topeka, Kan.-based Westar Energy and Broomfield, Colo.-based Renewable Energy Systems Americas (RES) say they will conduct a ground-breaking ceremony today at the Central Plains Wind Farm site in Marienthal, Kan.

Central Plains Wind Farm is a 99 MW project developed by RES and owned and operated by Westar. It is expected to go online by the end of the year.

‘Western Kansas has an ample natural supply of wind, and the support of the local residents and community leaders makes Wichita County a prime location for a wind farm,’ says Greg Greenwood, vice president for generation construction at Westar. ‘This ground-breaking symbolizes the commitment Westar has for providing clean, renewable energy to our customers and the state of Kansas. We're excited to be new neighbors in Wichita County.’
