Walmart has installed its first on-site industrial-size wind turbine at its distribution center in Red Bluff, Calif.
The GE SLE 1.5 MW wind turbine, which is expected to be operational by this fall, has a tower height of 265 feet and a blade diameter of 250 feet. It will fulfill approximately 15% to 20% of the distribution center's annual electricity use.
Foundation Windpower will install, own and operate the wind turbine, and Walmart will purchase the power output under a long-term agreement.
The wind turbine in Red Bluff joins 180 Walmart renewable energy projects in operation, including a 90 MW wind farm in West Texas that provides 15% of the power for over 300 Walmart stores and Sam's Clubs.
