Vestas, a wind turbine manufacturer headquartered in Denmark, has received an order for 21 units of its 3 MW wind turbines from Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), a Sacramento, Calif.-based utility, for the second phase of the Solano wind project in Rio Vista, Calif.
The first phase of the 63 MW project consisted of eight units of Vestas' V90-3.0 MW turbines, which were commissioned in early 2006. Shipments for the second phase will begin in the fourth quarter of 2007, with the commissioning date set for the second quarter of 2008.
‘We are very pleased to be awarded this additional contract for the V90 wind turbines for the Solano wind project,’ sayd Jens Soby, Vestas Americas' president. ‘The 3 MW program is an important part of the continuing growth of Vestas in the North American market in the coming years.’
As part of the contract, Vestas will supply, install and provide maintenance services for the turbines for a five-year period, the company adds.
