Vast Majority Of Indiana Residents Support Wind Development

Residents in Indiana are ‘overwhelmingly’ open to the development of wind farms, according to research from Purdue University.

Linda Prokopy, an associate professor of natural resources planning, and Kate Mulvaney, a former graduate student, published two reports gauging why Indiana residents embrace or reject wind farms. As part of their work, the researchers held surveys and interviews, as well as collected and analyzed wind-related news articles from local media.

The studies focused on Benton, Boone and Tippecanoe counties in Indiana. Prokopy says the research showed support of wind farms "across the board," with at least 80% of residents in all three counties either supporting wind farm development in their communities or supporting development but with some reservations.

The researchers say local government support was a key factor that contributed to overall support among residents, while vocal opposition groups and a lack of local government support were main reasons for rejection of wind farm development.
