Helsinki, Finland-based atmospheric observations provider Vaisala has acquired Newton, Mass.-based Second Wind Systems Inc. A purchase price was not disclosed.
According to Vaisala, the deal bolsters its presence in the wind sector and notes that the expertise of the combined companies will enhance wind measurement solutions to its customers. Second Wind specializes in advanced wind resource assessment technologies, including the Triton SoDAR, to provide developers with the data needed to plan, finance and operate wind farms.
The wind industry continues to evolve to effectively compete with traditional generation sources, as increasing the capability and accuracy of meteorological measurements is critical to keeping pace with advancements in turbine technology, notes Vaisala.
‘The acquisition of Second Wind fits well with our strategic goal to expand Vaisala's presence in the renewable energy markets,’ says Richard Pyle, director of the New Weather Markets customer group. ‘The combination of the two companies brings unique and comprehensive measurement solutions that are needed to help take the industry to the next level of optimizing and integrating wind energy.’
