The Switch Challenges The Wind Industry To A Drivetrain Tech Debate

0

The Switch, a manufacturer of permanent-magnet generators (PMGs) and full-power converters (FPCs), has released a technology paper that the company says addresses an ongoing wind industry debate on drivetrain technology selection.

With this paper, the Finnish manufacturer says it tackles performance misconceptions surrounding the main two drivetrain technologies that currently dominate the wind industry and claims PMGs with an FPC will emerge as a clear technology of choice for modern wind turbines.

"In the wind power industry, the debate on which generator and converter option makes for the best modern wind turbine drivetrain is still raging," says Jukka-Pekka Makinen, CEO of The Switch. "Numerous technology experts and industry commentators promote the use of the double-fed induction generator technology, while expressing doubts about the advantages of the permanent-magnet generator approach. In this paper, we aim to set the record straight and explain why PMG with a full-power converter is by far the best technology, regardless of which key decision-making criteria you use."
