Siemens AG has shipped its first wind turbine blades that were manufactured at the company's new blade factory in Fort Madison, Iowa. According to Siemens, blades for SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines are bound for the Abilene, Texas-based Sweetwater Wind Farm, which is jointly owned by Babcock & Brown and Catamount Energy. Siemens was awarded a contract for 35 of its SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines as well as wind turbine supply and service, maintenance and warranty agreements.

‘By expanding our wind turbine blade manufacturing capacity in the U.S., we are able to play a more significant role in helping the U.S. meet its growing electricity demand with clean wind energy and zero carbon emissions,’ says Randy Zwirn, president and CEO of Siemens Power Generation Inc.

Siemens anticipates it will employ approximately 400 people in its U.S. wind industry by the end of September.
