Siemens Energy has received its first U.S. order for 33 units of the new SWT-2.3-101 wind turbine from Minnesota Power for the Bison I wind project in North Dakota.

The project will be built in two phases. The first 16 turbines are planned for installation in 2010, and the remaining 17 units of phase two in 2011. When completed, the wind farm is expected to have a generating capacity of up to 75 MW.

The scope includes the supply, installation and commissioning of the 33 units, as well as a two-year service agreement.

‘We are very pleased that Minnesota Power chose our SWT-2.3-101 turbine to further develop their wind initiative in the region,’ says Andreas Nauen, CEO of the Siemens wind power business unit. ‘The SWT-2.3-101 can fit many U.S. wind project sites and allows customers to harvest more energy from their wind sites.’

With a diameter of 101 meters, the rotor of the new SWT-2.3-101 has a swept area of 8,000 square meters, according to the company.
