On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed Sally Jewell to replace Ken Salazar as the secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI).

President Barack Obama nominated Jewell, president and CEO of outdoor-apparel company REI and a former oil and bank executive, in February. Salazar announced his resignation in January.

In a statement following the confirmation, Obama said he was pleased with the Senate's action.

"With her extensive business experience, including her background in the energy sector, along with her lifelong commitment to conservation, Sally is the right person for this important job," Obama said. "She brings an important mix of strong management skills, appreciation for our nation's tradition of protecting our public lands and heritage, and a keen understanding of what it means to be good stewards of our natural resources."
