Sempra Generation, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Sempra Energy, has signed a 20-year agreement to provide Southern California Edison (SCE) with up to 250 MW of wind power generated at the La Rumorosa Wind Power facility under development in Baja California, Mexico. Sempra Generation recently acquired the development assets associated with La Rumorosa under a co-development agreement with San Diego-based Cannon Power Corp.
According to Sempra Generation, the La Rumorosa project would generate power from as many as 125 wind turbines to be installed along the easterly ridge lines of the Sierra Juarez mountains in the Ejido Jacume near the town of La Rumorosa, about 70 miles east of San Diego. The project could be operational by mid-to-late 2010.
Under terms of the proposed purchase agreement, Cannon Power will provide technical assistance and co-develop the project with Sempra Generation. Future expansion phases of the project are under consideration.
This contract represents one of six new renewable energy contracts recently signed by SCE. In total, the contracts could provide the utility's customers with up to 480 MW of low-carbon generation – enough power to serve 314,000 average homes. A wind energy contract with Granite Wind LLC in Apple Valley, Calif., will provide up to 81 MW of capacity, according to SCE.
