The Government of Quebec has issued a decree authorizing the construction and operation of EDF EN Canada's 24.6 MW La Mitis Community Wind Project.
EDF says the wind farm, to be located in the unorganized territory Lac-a-la-Croix in the MRC de La Mitis, demonstrates the importance of collaboration and support of local communities in the successful development and implementation of wind energy projects.
"We share ownership of this project with Energie renouvelable de la Mitis, who invest in a proportion of 30 percent," explains Alex Couture, director of project development for EDF EN Canada. "An annual voluntary contribution of C$61,500 will be paid by the project during the 20-year operational phase to the MRC of La Mitis. In addition, a contribution of C$200,000 into a Community Development Fund will occur at the time of commissioning."
The project will consist of 12 turbines supplied by REpower Systems SE. Construction is scheduled to commence in spring 2014, with commissioning expected in the fall 2014.
Hydro-Quebec Distribution awarded EDF EN Canada two wind projects in December 2010 as a result of the 2009 call for tenders, which was focused on community projects. In total, EDF EN Canada says it will have developed and built 1,003.2 MW of wind energy facilities in Quebec by the end of 2015 for a total investment of over C$2 billion in the province.
