PepsiCo recently purchased enough renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Norcross, Ga.-based Sterling Planet to offset all of the company's U.S.-based manufacturing facilities, headquarters, distribution centers and regional offices. According to the company, the agreement represents the largest REC purchase to date.

PepsiCo's three-year purchase is comprised of more than 1 billion kWh per year. It places the company at the top of the Fortune 500 purchaser list and allows it to be a member of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership, which includes organizations that voluntarily buy green power.

‘America is shifting to a 'green culture,' with more and more businesses understanding that environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility,’ says Stephen L. Johnson, an administrator of EPA.
