Sioux Falls, S.D.-based utility NorthWestern Energy (NWE) will purchase 25 MW of wind power from a wind project currently under development by Clipper Windpower Inc. and BP Wind Energy in Hand County, S.D., for delivery to electric customers in the state.
Once built, the 25 MW wind project will consist of 10 2.5 MW Liberty wind turbines manufactured by Clipper. The wind turbines will be built at Clipper's Cedar Rapids, Iowa, factory.
‘With the ranking of fourth highest wind resource in the nation, it's befitting that South Dakotans will be tapping into their abundant natural resource as a source for power’ says John Lamb, president and CEO of Clipper Windpower Development Corp. ‘Particularly considering today's economic situation and the growing demand for clean power, we applaud NorthWestern Energy's leadership in increasing wind energy's role in the state.’
The project is anticipated to begin construction in the first half of 2009 and will interconnect directly into NorthWestern Energy's 69 kW transmission system. Commercial operation is anticipated by early 2010.
