New Nacelle Testing Facility Signs Up First Customer

The Lindoe Offshore Renewables Center (LORC) and Vestas have signed a contract to test the turbine maker's nacelles at a new facility in Denmark.

Vestas will be the first customer when the indoor LORC Nacelle Testing facility, located at the former shipyard in Lindo Industrial Park, is finished by next summer. According to LORC, the test center will have two different test docks, one performing mechanical lifetime tests and the other testing nacelle functionality under extreme stresses. Vestas has contracted to use the latter, the Function Tester.

At LORC, Vestas will test larger wind turbines, such as the new V164-8.0 MW unit. LORC notes the new center will have the capacity to test nacelles of up to 10 MW.

‘For Vestas, LORC's testing means, in lay language, that we can test nacelles in a very realistic way without having to wait for the wind to blow,’ comments Anders Vedel, chief technology officer at Vestas.

The contract between Vestas and LORC will initially run for two and a half years beginning in summer 2014.
