Navitus Bay Offshore Wind Project Scales Back Plans Following Public Feedback

Navitus Bay Development Ltd., a 50-50 joint venture between Eneco Wind UK Ltd. and EDF Energy Renewables, will again scale back the proposed offshore wind park in order to reduce its visual impact.

In response to public feedback during the final round of consultation last year, the developer says it will remove the northernmost part of the development and move the site up to 3.8 km farther away from the U.K. shore. In addition, the maximum number of turbines that will be built – assuming the use of the 5 MW model – will fall from 218 (representing 1.1 GW) to 194 (970 MW).

This latest change, when combined with a previous scaling back of the site in December 2012, will significantly reduce the visual impact of the development from all viewpoints along the coast in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, the developer adds.

"We have always listened to and acted upon the feedback we receive from our public consultations and our statutory consultees," says Mike Unsworth, project director at Navitus Bay.

"As we move toward submitting our final application for planning permission, we believe that this latest boundary change is a positive step, ensuring that the project reflects local views whilst bringing considerable benefits to the region," he adds.
