The Lincoln Electric System public utility has announced plans to triple the amount of wind energy it uses within the next two years.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, the Lincoln Electric System board of directors recently approved a plan to negotiate a purchase agreement for 100 MW of wind energy. Currently, the city-owned utility has about 30 MW of wind energy.

The paper notes that Jason Fortik, vice president of power supply, says the utility would not build any wind farms but would contract with a wind developer to buy the electricity for a fixed price over 20 years, adding that a power purchase agreement could be finalized by July 1.
