In Eastbrook, Maine, contractor Reed & Reed is using Manitowoc's new Boom Raising System to install 19 wind turbines at the Bull Hill wind farm.
This is the first time that the Boom Raising System has been used on a job site, Manitowoc says. The 19 turbines at Bull Hill are being built on roughly 100 acres and are expected to generate enough electricity to power about 18,000 homes.
The Boom Raising System utilizes a large hydraulic cylinder housed in a 10-foot boom insert section that attaches to the boom base, the company explains. The boom raising cylinder works in conjunction with the boom hoist by exerting an upward force on the boom. This is achieved by extending the cylinder downward onto prepared ground or matting. Once the boom angle is raised to 38 degrees, the boom hoist fully takes over.
"This job was a real challenge for us because we moved from 262-foot towers up to 312-foot towers, so we needed more boom to erect the taller towers," explains Ron Babb, a crane operator working on the project. "Without the Boom Raising System, we would have been forced to rent another crane or would not have been able to even bid on the job."
