Juhl Wind Inc. says it has begun construction on the GL Wind LLC wind power system, located in Lewiston, Minn. Juhl Wind is serving as the developer and construction manager for the community wind farm, which is estimated to cost approximately $10 million.

The GL Wind system will utilize two Clipper Windpower C96 wind turbines, each with a nameplate capacity of 2.5 MW. The turbines will be operated at a combined capacity of 4.95 MW in order to meet the distributed-generation requirements established by the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, Juhl Wind explains.

GL Wind LLC is a community wind partnership made up of Gundersen Lutheran Hospital and a local investment partner. Juhl Wind says it has been working with GL Wind for the past year and a half to move the project through the various development stages in order to get to the construction phase.

Juhl is coordinating the contractor activities, turbine supply and commissioning during the construction phase. Once completed, the GL Wind system is expected to generate approximately 14 GWh of energy annually.
