On Monday, German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Philipp Rosler officially inaugurated the 400 MW BARD Offshore 1 wind farm.
The wind farm comprises 80 5-MW turbines and is located 100 km to the northwest of the island of Borkum, Germany. The first turbines were connected to the grid back in December 2010, and installation of all 80 machines was completed earlier this month. According to BARD, the project already supplies 80% of the offshore electricity produced in Germany.
The inauguration ceremony, which took place on the BARD 1 service and transformer platform, was conducted by Rosler together with Michael Baur, CEO of BARD Group, and Lutz Diederichs, director at German bank and project partner HypoVereinsbank.
"BARD Offshore 1 is the impressive pioneering project of a young industry which has the potential to play a key role in our energy mix in the long term," said Rosler. "The successful completion of the offshore wind farm represents a technological and logistical feat. I would like to express my congratulations and respect to all those who have been involved."
